The long awaited project to expand the road section between Mwenge and Morocco Road in Dar es Salaam is set to be implemented soon following the signing of agreement to that effect recently in the city by the Government of Tanzania and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The project, which will be undertaken by Nippo - Dai JV Construction Company, will see the 4.3 km road section widened into four lanes to cater for the heavy traffic between the city and its northern suburbs leading to Bagamoyo.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam during the signing of the agreement, the Minister for Work, Transport and Communications, Eng. Isack Kamwelwe urgued the contractor to execute the contract to meet the contractual scheduled opening 24 months from now.

“It is our hope that the project would proceed well under close supervision of Tanzania National Roads Agency (Tanroads),” he said of the project which is one of the government’s initiatives to address traffic jam in the city.

JICA Executive Senior Vice President, Mr. Kazuhiko Koshikawa said the widening of the New Bagamoyo Road, along with Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line, is vital trunk road connecting Dar es Salaam and northern parts of the country.

“ICA is delighted to take part in solving some of [the country’s] developmental key issues,” Mr. Koshikawa said and added that the initiative of widening the Mwenge - Morocco Road stretch would ease traffic congestion along new Bagamoyo road and eventually accelerate development in the city.

Japan government through JICA has been supporting various government initiatives for improving road infrastructures, especially in the City of Dar es Salaam, including expansion of Morogoro Road, expansion of Ali Hassan Mwinyi Road, construction of Mfugale Flyover, and expansion of Mwenge to Tegeta road.
