Twelve local government authorities have received funding amounting to 137.38 billion shillings from the Government towards 15 strategic revenue generation projects, TPJ has learnt.

Speaking recently in Dodoma after signing the contract that enabled the transfer of the funds  for projects the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance and Planning, Mr. Doto James said the LGAs depended on the central government for funding  of their projects by more than 80 percent.

The funding provided would facilitate implementation of projects in Kinondoni, Kigamboni, Iringa, Biharamulo, Hanang, Tarime, Kisarawe, Kibaha, Bagamoyo and Ilemela dictricts along with the city councils of Mwanza and Tanga.

The projects would include markets, cashew nut processing plant, development of Oysterbay beach and construction of bus stands and parking lots.

Mr. James warned against embezzlement and misconduct in the implementation of projects and implored everyone involved to strive towards meeting the value for money objectives.

“We are not going to tolerate misuse of funds whatsoever and any transgression will be severely dealt with,” he said.

According to the Commissioner for Budget, Ms Mary Maganga this is the second phase of the project, following the first phase which was launched in Financial year 2017/18 and which saw implementation of 22 strategic projects in 17 districts councils at a total value of 131 billion shillings.

The Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of State in the President's Office, Regional Administration and Local Government, Ms Dorothy Gwajima echoed Mr. James’s warning about failure to ensure projects attain value for money saying the government would not tolerate misuse of funds and laxity in the supervision of those projects, and adding that district executive directors risked disciplinary measures should they fail to play their part effectively.
