The Tanzania National Roads Agency (Tanroads) and Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Company (SMCC) of Japan have signed a contract for construction of a new bridge at Gerezani meant to ease traffic along Bandari Road, TPJ has learnt.

According to Tanroads Chief Executive Officer, Eng. Patric Mfugale, construction of a new four-lane bridge at a cost of TZS. 25.28 billion, would be funded by the Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) grant.

Eng. Mfugale also said at the signing ceremony that consultant of the project, whose design  accommodate a new service route for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and the standard gauge railway (SGR), would be Ingerosec Corporation of Japan.

He further noted the significance of the project in the light of the on-going rehabilitation of the Dar es Salaam Port, which is vital is handling goods to and from upcountry areas and neighbouring countries.

It is to be remembered that as recent as September last year, during the inauguration of Dar’s Mfugale Flyover, President John Magufuli  alluded to eventuality of the Gerezani bridge project as well as a four-kilometre road between Mwenge and Morocco area in Dar es Salaam.

For his part, the Minister for Works, Transport and Communication, Mr. Isack Kamwelwe heralded the advent of the project an others to come as ample evidence of Government’s efforts towards making Dar es Salaam the most attractive city for living and for business.
