Wami River in Bagamoyo District, Pwani Region, is set to have a new bridge in two years’ time following the signing of a 68bn/- contract for its construction between the Government of Tanzania and Chinese contractor, TPJ has learnt.

Tanzania National Roads Agency (Tanroads) Regional Maintenance Manager, Engineer Zuhura Amani, told the agency's Regional Board Meeting recently that construction of the new 513.5 metres long and 11.85metres wide bridge would be carried out by Power Construction Corporation from China.

"The Chinese contractor is currently continuing with mobilisation works... construction is set to start soon after finalization of preparations," she noted.

According to Eng. Amani, the project would include construction of two roads, each 3.82 kilometres long on either approach of the bridge, linking it with the Chalinze - Segera highway in an undertaking expected to take two years to complete.

Chairman of the meeting, the Pwani Regional Commissioner Evarist Ndikilo, underlined  the need of striving to meet value for money objective in construction of all roads and other infrastructure as well as shunning all temptations towards misconduct in procurement proceedings including road maintenance works which have been allocated a total of 25bn/- in the 2018/19 fiscal year.

In September last year, the Deputy Minister for Works, Transport and Communication, Mr. Elias Kwandikwa told Parliament in Dodoma that the Government was determined to construct very soon a replacement for the current bridge which “hardly withstands the heavy weight of vehicles plying the route.”
