The government has released TZS 21.7bn for the construction of different infrastructures in Mtwara Mikindani council, TPJ has learnt.

The works, to be implemented under Tanzania Strategic Cities Project, would involve construction of four roads to bitumen standards, construction of three recreation centres, construction of drainage systems, construction of a modern market as well as the construction of new Mikindani bus stand.

Speaking to the media during official visit to the projects, the Mtwara Regional Commissioner, Gelasius Byakanwa, said completion of the projects would uplift the scenery of Mtwara and its environs.

“Upon completion of the projects the residents of Mtwara will be able to enjoy better services which would be accessed easily from these infrastructures,” Mr. Byakanwa said.

He also cautioned the contractors against the temptation of taking shortcuts while implementation the projects resulting in shoddy works that undermine the Government’s value for money objective.

Earlier, the District Commissioner Evod Mmanda, had said the monies for the project which will be accomplished by October 2019, were a World Bank loan to the Government.

Of late, the Government has been cautioning councils to conduct due diligence on each contractor before hiring them in efforts towards getting competent contractors who would complete projects as per contracts.
