The Tanzania Meteorological Agency (TMA) has signed a TZS 5.5bn contract with Enterprise Electronics Corporation (EEC) for procurement and installation of a weather radar at Mikindani in Mtwara Region.

The radar, the installation of which will take 14 months, is meant to boost accuracy of meteorological reports within southern regions following availability of similar facilities in Dar es Salaam and Mwanza regions.

TMA’s advisory Board Chairman, Dr. Buruhani Nyenzi, said installation of the radar would play a crucial role in enhancing accuracy of weather reports within the country.

“Modern equipment [like radar] are crucial in improving accuracy of meteorological reports and so TMA is very thankful to the Government for providing us with funds to procure and install the radar in Mtwara” said Dr. Nyenzi.

Director General of TMA, Dr. Agnes Kijazi, said that plans were underway to procure and install similar facilities in Kigoma and Mbeya regions and eventually to have seven weather radars country wide.

The representative of EEC, Mr. Edwin Kasanga, said apart from installation, the contractor would provide training to TMA staff on operating and mainitainance of the equipment.

Accuracy of weather forecasts by TMA stands at 92.9 percent which is well above the international minimum figure of 70 percent. The agency is responsible for the provision of meteorological services; weather forecasts, climate warnings and advisories in the country.
