Tanzania’s Medical Stores Department (MSD) is now formally the sole distributor of medicines, medical supplies and laboratory equipment within member states of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), TPJ has learnt.

The status took effect recently following signing of the contract between the MSD Director General, Mr. Laurean Bwanakunu, and SADC Executive Secretary, Dr. Stergomena Tax, in Dar es Salaam.

According to a statement issued by MSD on its website, the contract comes after the MSD was tasked to prepare for the responsibility since November last year at a meeting with SADC officials in South Africa.

The MSD Director General, Mr. Laurean Bwanakunu, was quoted as saying that that the signing of contract has kick started the procurement system.

"After signing the contract MSD would have several responsibilities which include receiving orders from 16 SADC member states, supply of medicines and medical supplies, laboratory equipments, administering statistics and information as needed, controlling the database as well as monitoring procurement and supply process," he said.

According to the statement, MSD would monitor and control the prices of medicines and medical supplies and would ensure transparency of their accessibility within the states as well as establishing a special unit within its procurement directorate for procurement of medicines and medical supplies solely for SADC member states.

SADC Executive Secretary, Dr. Stergomena Tax, said that the contract brought great honour to Tanzania, as it meant that SADC judged the country as being trustworthy in the endeavour, with ability and satisfactory parameters in the supply chain, and having won the contract after a stiff competition.

It would be remembered that in August this year, MSD had to first start working towards harmonization of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) within SADC, which would facilitate the task now at hand having discovered that the entity was going to use the technology in each of the 16 member countries who may have had a different ICT platform.
