Following a Government directive that public entities procure goods directly from manufacturers, the Medical Stores Department (MSD) has improved drugs availability in the country from the previous 15 percent to 80 percent by the end of financial year 2016/17.The MSD Director General, Laurean Bwanakunu, said in Dar es Salaam recently that the improvement came about due to the fact that procuring directly from the manufacturers enabled the entity to procure most drugs at lower prices. He added that MSD has entered into contract with 73 manufacturers, including 11 who are locally based and that the entity was working to encourage more pharmaceutical firms to produce drugs and medical supplies in the country through public-private partnerships.According to him, the Government is in the final stages of handing over a 100 acre plot to MSD at Misugusugu-Kibaha, Pwani Region for the construction of a drug manufacturing factory.
