The Government has given the contractor implementing a water project in Lindi Region an ultimatum to complete it in four months otherwise stern action would be taken against him and everybody involved in the supervision of the works.
The ultimatum was issued by President John Magufuli after inspecting the project recently and expressed his dismay on realizing the contractor, Overseas Infrastructure Alliance Private Limited, had failed to complete the project on time.
A statement issued by the directorate of presidential communications said the President had consequently ordered immediate confiscation of the passports of Mr. Rajendra Kumar, the Indian firm’s representative and those of his assistants to ensure they remain on site until completion of the project which was supposed to be commissioned in March 2015.
“This is unacceptable, Lindi residents have water problems [although] funds have been issued, but the contractor decides to send the money to India instead… the contractor is not on site yet those who are supposed to supervise him don’t take any action. Why didn’t you kick him out all this time?,” queried the President.
President Magufuli said he had been disappointed with poor supervision of the project, which has already consumed 21.8 billion/- out of 29 billion/- earmarked for the work.
Water and Irrigation Minister, Eng. Gerson Lwenge, said the contractor had stopped the works, funded by loans from German Development Bank and the European Union because “he had run out of funds” to complete the project, expected to deliver up to five million cubic litres of water per day.
